Tenrikyo Teachings

Guiding humanity toward true peace, heartfelt gratitude, and the universal realization of the Joyous Life.

The Purpose of Creation: The Joyous Life

Tenrikyo teaches that God the Parent (Tenri-O-no-Mikoto) created humankind not to experience suffering or despair, but to live together in peace, joy, and mutual care—and by seeing human beings live the Joyous Life (Yokigurashi), God the Parent shares in that joy.

God the Parent (Tenri-O-no-Mikoto)

The true parent of all humankind who provides life, breath, warmth, water, and the natural forces that sustain all living creatures. God the Parent embraces all human beings with boundless parental love.

Oyasama (Miki Nakayama)

The Shrine of God the Parent and the beloved Parent of humankind. Through 50 years of divine model (Hinagata), She demonstrated how to navigate hardships with unconditional joy and love for all people.

A Thing Lent, A Thing Borrowed

Our physical body is not our own possession; it is lent to us by God the Parent. Only our mind is truly our own. Understanding this truth fills us with natural gratitude for our health and every breath.

Sweeping the Dusts of the Mind

Self-centered thoughts are not inherent evil, but like dust that settles on a mirror. We sweep them away daily through prayer and reflection: greed, miserliness, hatred, anger, arrogance, and covetousness.

Hinokishin (Selfless Service)

Spontaneous, joyous action performed without thought of personal reward. Whether cleaning a street, helping a neighbor, or comforting someone in need, it is an expression of gratitude for being kept alive.

The Service (Tsutome)

The fundamental prayer in Tenrikyo performed with sacred musical instruments, sacred songs (Mikagura-uta), and coordinated hand movements to pray for universal salvation and world harmony.

Sacred Scriptures

The Three Sacred Scriptures of Tenrikyo

The direct revelations of God the Parent and teachings of Oyasama are recorded in:

Ofudesaki The Tip of the Divine Writing Brush (1,711 verses of divine poetry).
Mikagura-uta The Songs for the Sacred Service performed during Tsutome.
Osashizu The Divine Directions offering timely spiritual counsel.
